An Experimental RPG
This games is... an experiment. A testing ground and a learning experience for me, where I can experiment with the ideas I've been tinkering on and off for months, even years. But this is also an opportunity to reach out, to try and see get my work out there, to start showing my creative side to more than just friends and family. I'm excited to try and share my ideas with everyone, to have fun making something and show that to people!
I'm trying to test out two different ideas that I've been tinkering with for a while now, one for months now, the other a few years; a D12 system I've developed alongside some friends, and the Skill Pool mechanic which... actually was inspired by another RPG - Pathfinder. The idea came from a few of its classes, the Gunslinger and the Swashbuckler, a pair of classes all about daring and reckless deeds, and managing their luck, their grit, their panache.
And I thought... why not take that and try to make it a core mechanic in an RPG?
That... took a lot more work than I thought, especially when you don't have a base to work with. Thankfully one of my projects offered a base I cold work with.
I admit... I was working on this even before the jam proper, but... I always knew I wanted to work on the bulk of it during Devtober. I thought it would be fun. ^_^
Sadly... not quite. Didn't have the greatest start to Devtober, with all sorts of things just stacking up for a while until it felt like a wall to try and work on this. And the more I let that wall build, the more frustrating it became.
I'd really wanted to work on this. I'd been so excited! And now I was just worrying that I wouldn't be able to have anything to show for it even though... this was an experiment.
It's... hard not to be hard on yourself, to beat yourself up for not meeting your own expectations, and get stuck on a problem and just let it spiral. Friends... have been a pretty big help for dealing with that, getting me to step back, to breath, and just... take my time to think. One of them even helped me settle on some design goals for this system beyond just Experimentation.
I want to create a character focused RPG that encourages the Player and the GM to work together to craft their story. I want the players to think about how their characters connect to the world, and how the GM can bring their characters into the story. I want this system to be quick to learn, and easy to start. I want to encourage the players to dive in and take risks.
These are my goals for developing this game, and I hope that all of you will be right here along with me.
